Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend General Motors has decided to significantly enhance its GM Military Discount. Formerly GM’s program covered current members of the armed forces plus those up to one year after discharge. The new terms of the program extend the discount to former members of the military up to three years after discharge.

“They are reacclimating to civilian life and we want to give them as much time as possible as they are reacclimating to get into a new GM vehicle,” said Susan Lock, manager, vehicle purchase programs, General Motors.

Another important part of the revised and enhanced program is the inclusion of Cadillac vehicles. Formerly, Cadillac had not been part of the military discount program. The offers now extend across Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands. There are some exclusions, but the vast majority of vehicles from those brands are offered in the program.

GM claims its military discount offering is the best program of its kind. It is available to active duty, reserve members and retired veterans from the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard. Retirees, spouses and household members can also purchase under this special program, Lock said. Each current or recent service member can use two authorizations each year for themselves, spouses and household members.

With the exception of the additional years of eligibility, the core of the GM Military Discount program remains the same. Military members and former members, as well as members of their immediate families, qualify for a special discount on new vehicles at participating dealers. The discount is a formula below manufacturer suggested list price (MSRP) and in general is the same across all brands.

Additional discounts might be available

In addition to the military discount, former military members might qualify for other discounts offered directly by GM dealers. Those discounts have the potential compound the savings for participating customers.

“Supporting service members and their families is truly part of our fabric at GM,” said Steve Hill, vice president, U.S. sales, service and marketing. “Extending the discount to three years post-service allows military families to settle back into civilian life and take the time they need before purchasing a new vehicle.”

GM — which employs more than 6,000 veterans — has been recognized as the top automotive employer for veterans and their spouses in the Military Times’ Best for Vets and VIQTORY’s Military Friendly Spouse and Gold Employer rankings.
