Get the Most Out of Your Tires

Interview with tire expert Woody Rogers offers new insight on your next tire purchase

Your tires

If you’re like most of us, you don’t pay very much attention to your tires. With luck you check their inflation every once in a while, but other than that, tires are probably a non-issue to you. But they probably should be more consequential to you than that. With very little effort you can get the most out of your tires.

Having the right tires can increase your ride comfort, your fuel economy and your overall safety. A poor tire choice can bring with it tire noise, unnecessary wear and lack of traction when traction is of extreme importance. You will typically invest hundreds of dollars in the next set of tires for your vehicle. Instead of just purchasing the first set of tires that you see, shouldn’t you get more from your investment than that?

Woody Rogers, a tire expert and tester with Tire Rack, certainly thinks so. Rogers has made studying a recommending tires his life’s work. He happens to like autocrossing, but he is quite aware that a racing-oriented tire might be exactly the wrong tire for your needs. Instead, he recommends that you take a quick inventory of what you want from your car, how you drive and what aspects of driving are most important to you. With those parameters in hand, it will become much easier to find a tire that matches up.

Tire testing has become one of Rogers’ passions. Devising and executing tests that will simulate real-world conditions and give real-world answers isn’t easy, but he and his Tire Rack colleagues have taken many of the industry tests one — or two or three — better. His goal is to help you discover the right tires for your individual set of circumstances.  He and his co-workers at Tire Rack literally go to the ends of the Earth to test tires, so you can be assured their findings are accurate, impartial and useful in the tire-choice process.
